In conclusione, dopo essersi sorbiti i pistolotti moralistico-guerreschi delle serie Gundam, vedersi Anima Yell!, Yama no Susume o Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san è solo salutare.

With the current popularity, by my perception, of WW2 and military works in Japan especially naval related, I was reminded of a 1990s manga, book, game and anime series in Japan called Konpeki no Kantai. It’s a fairly obscure work, and never had official English translations, but various translations are going around online. Some seem rather trolling descriptions and dubious quality, like having ‘a realistic analysis of war’ as a description despite the series seeming almost like clear parody at times to me.
It follows a somewhat popular scenario, portraying Yamamoto as good, wise, honorable leader who can motivate his nation well. It seems like a popular scenario much like the Alexander the Great conquerors the world for Greek literature; Rome never falls idea; ‘Confederates win the Civil War’ is popular for Americans, and not just white supremacists; America winning the War of 1812 and conquering Canada popular with nationalists, Britain keeping the Empire with one grand battle against united enemies and/or convincing the people of superior British leadership.
This series is similar in ways to these alternate histories. The divergence point is 1905. It’s a pulp adventure type story. No horror, just victory and excitement.
As Yamamoto dies in 1943 as his plane is shot down, but as he dies he is sent back in time. In 1905 he decides to change history with his knowledge of the future tactics, history and technology.
First, he removes the Japanese army and its leadership. Yamamoto nearly dies in the process, but he is victorious and his faction succeeds. This is portrayed as purging Japan of its potential future war crimes.
Yamamoto then solidifies his control over the remains of the civilian government and emperor, bringing about a just and peaceful government. He essentially launches a coup and solidifies the junta.
The Japanese then begin to liberate Asian nations from western colonialism.
Then, the Japanese honorably attack Pearl Harbor, giving a warning clearly in advance, and then proceeding the destroy every trace of American military presence on the island and invading it successfully with few loses. The Japanese then liberate Hawaii from American imperialism, and the grateful Hawaiians willingly join the Japanese and aid them by allowing them to establish Hawaii as a Japanese fort.
The remaining American military force sails to Pearl Harbor, but is destroyed by a single shot from a powerful new technology, Japanese heat based weapon. A pulp fiction death ray.
The Americans attempt to retaliate in the Doolittle Raid, but the Japanese long range radar detects the force in the distance and scrambles the Sourai, a new high altitude, high speed plane, the ultimate aircraft personally designed by Yamamoto which destroys the force. Japanese naval special forces marines deploy from I-900 and I-1000 type submarines and skillfully overwhelm the western forces on various Pacific islands. The submarines are nuclear powered, because the Japanese vow never to use something as cowardly as nuclear weapons and instead use the submarines as self defense instruments, to protect themselves and to protect helpless other people of the world.
They also deploy Mark 60 CAPTOR torpedo mines (a real life 1980 design) to sink additional western allies forces. Then a B-32 raid occurs here, and actually damages Japanese ships with gun strafe before being destroyed by the death ray weapons on the Japanese ships. One of the B-32 had its crew killed by a near miss and the plane crashes intact, is captured, and reverse engineered and improved.
The Japanese then launch two attacks against the Panama Canal, the first disabling it, and the second destroying it completely, while minimizing collateral damage on innocent Panama citizens and being careful to target just the militant American forces. Then they launch a carrier strike against the Manhattan Project bases, destroying them as well.
Albert Einstein is at this point shown working for the Japanese, who has joined them because of Japanese benevolence and because Japan promised him that they would make him a Jewish nation like Israel in Asia.
Japanese forces then launch a raid against mainland America with their skilled commando forces, liberating the Japanese in internment camps unjustly kept prisoner.
The battleship Yamato also survives many engagements and is given many chances for glory, and takes them wiping out dozens of ships and entire fleets by itself and without support.
Then the Nazi Germans betray the Japanese! The Japanese however are ready, and launch an air strike on the Nazi arctic nuclear weapons base. On the way there, the Japanese see a formation of hundreds of British aircraft in the distance being destroyed by only a dozen Nazi super planes. The super planes destroy all the allied aircraft without losses and chase the Japanese aircraft, but the Japanese bombers manage to shoot down some of the planes before the Japanese reveal that they can actually outrun the super planes.
The British at this point ally with the Japanese.
A German super ship, the U-3000 sinks a Japanese naval force, but is then captured by a Japanese super submarine the size of a skyscraper, which captures the German submarine intact by surfacing underneath the German sub, leaving the German sub helpless out of the water.
The Americans are devious and racist, and unable to comprehend how the Japanese have this technology. FDR dies from stress and Truman is appointed as the new leader, who is both insecure, and arrogant in American power. They are also much more unstable then Japan because they are a multi-ethnic nation. Truman eventually realizes that the Americans have a misplaced sense of justice compared to the true justice of the Japanese, and surrenders.
The Americans try one last underhanded trick by having spies try to assassinate key Japanese officials. The Japanese officials actually try to negotiate with the spies, but the unreasonable and dishonorable spies refuse to listen to the pleas for friendship. All looks lost, but the spies are stopped by a Japanese actress who is really a super spy, and apparently actually existed in real life.
Then Truman is then overthrown when Eisenhower and MacArthur collaborate and launch a coup.
While some might think a coup into a military dictatorship might be bad, the series portrays it as a good thing and the new leaders are much more reasonable.
The Soviet Union surrenders to Germany, and Stalin is implied to have died.
Leon Trotsky establishes a free Republic in Asia with the help of the Japanese, as does Rommel.
The remainder of the story is the Japanese fighting the Nazi forces and the Nazi allied Argentina, the Japanese stop Operation Sealion from invading the British islands with their carrier force and new super carriers. They drive the Germans out of Africa, the Middle East, and Indian with their Type 61 tanks (a real life design), multi-role attack and transport helicopters, and PGM missiles.
Also fictional inventions are shown off, usually as descriptions with lots of zeroes behind it, like super ship 9000 which has the ability to shoot down incoming shells and torpedoes, and perform high speed dodges with maneuvering thrusters and reaction control systems that allow it to rapidly change direction while conserving speed.
American and British forces occasionally also help the Japanese too in this fic, with the Americans having rejoined the war after Germany destroys Washington with an attack from the sea.
The series is deliciously pulp and hilarious.
